Centering Places

The beach in California…

Mumford & Sons on my iTunes…

Ahhh….

What is it about those places, certain places that seem to center us, help us breathe again, help us catch our breath…do you have those?

I think I have two of them…the first is being in the presence of my family. I know I know, that sounds completely and totally cheesy, but it is true. When I am with them I feel the most like who God created me to be…husband…father…Rob…me….

But for me there is another…it is a location. What is strange is that this is a location in which I have never actually lived. I have visited. I have stayed for good chunks of the summer. My mom grew up here and my grandma still lives here…it is Carlsbad, CA. I have absolutely no right to call it home and given the cost of a house here I likely never will, however there is something about this place that has a ‘centering’ effect on me…I feel like things are good when I am here and I feel invigorated. Even when I miss my family deeply…

There are times in life, for all of us, that get crazy, hectic, overwhelming, stressful…you know what I mean, those times in life where we are slammed with the tsunami of life’s responsibilities….where we feel like we are drowning…yeah…you do know what I mean don’t you?

My family helps center me…but so does this place for some strange reason. I don’t really know why, but it does. Is it a God thing? I don’t know…but when I see that ocean, when I feel the sun in this particular place, when I smell the sea in the air…for some reason I remember who I am…

Do you have those moments? Those places? Is it your family for you? A location?

Is there something or someone or someplace that seems to center you in all circumstances? Is there something, someone, or someplace that centers you in your faith? With God?

What might that be?

I pray that you might find that place, person, thing….find it and use it to center yourself and remember who it is that God created YOU to be…and be that person…
